Brazilian Adventure

First published in 1933, the book describes an early expedition to the far reaches of the Amazon to discover the fate of Colonel Percy Fawcett, a famous explorer who with his son and a friend had gone missing in 1925 while searching for the lost city of Z. Peter Fleming’s funny, exciting, well-written account was widely praised at the time and became an instant bestseller. It has retained a loyal following ever since, and is considered a classic of the genre of 1930s travel writing.

This edition includes a foreword by Kate Grimond, Fleming’s daughter, and 34 photographs, some of which have not been published before.

Printed endpapers of maps, taken from earlier editions, show the area of Brazil where the search for Colonel Fawcett went.

The books are sewn, covered in fine green cloth. Spine and front board are gold-blocked using the designs of the original 1930s Jonathan Cape edition.

The numbered edition is limited to 150

Price: £95

News from Tartary: A Journey from Peking to Kashmir

First published in 1936, the book tells the story of a remarkable journey from Beijing to Kashmir across the mountains and wastes of Central Asia by Fleming and his intrepid Swiss companion, Ella Maillart. Describing a seven month expedition by lorry, camel, pony and on foot, through little known, politically uncertain and arduous terrain, it is a masterpiece of travel writing. Today it conveys the experience of a snail’s pace journey without the benefit of GPS and other modern accoutrements with brilliant clarity.

This edition includes a foreword by Kate Grimond, Fleming’s daughter, and all the original illustrations together with a new frontispiece showing Fleming and Maillart.

Printed endpapers show the map taken from the earlier editions of their journey from China to India

The books are sewn, covered in fine red cloth. Spine and front board are gold blocked using the designs of the original 1930s Jonathan Cape editions.

The numbered edition is limited to 150 of each book.

Price: £95

' Brazilian Adventure is the best travel book I have read for a long time, It is crammed with sound observation, good writing, humour and a unique blend of disillusion, foolhardiness and high spirits.'

J.B.Priestley:

' It needs true literary power to turn a diary of diurnal endurance into an epic of adventure. Such is Mr Fleming’s present achievement.'

Harold Nicolson:
